Over the years, I've lost count of how many times I've recommended magnesium — to friends, to family, to clients who've come to me exhausted, wired, anxious, bloated, or just running on empty. It's one of the first things I reach for, and I've watched it quietly change things for people who had tried everything else.

Why Magnesium Matters
Magnesium is required for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body. That number is so large it almost becomes abstract, so let me make it concrete:
Sleep. Magnesium is required for GABA production — the neurotransmitter that quiets neuronal activity and allows your nervous system to shift from alert to restful. Low magnesium means a nervous system that can't fully stand down, even when you're exhausted.
Muscle function. Every muscle contraction and relaxation requires magnesium. This includes smooth muscle — the muscle lining your digestive tract — which is why magnesium deficiency shows up so reliably as constipation and muscle cramping, especially at night.
Insulin function. Insulin receptors are magnesium-dependent. Your body's ability to process glucose requires adequate magnesium at the cellular level. Deficiency is strongly associated with impaired metabolic function.
Energy production. ATP — the energy currency of every cell — must be bound to magnesium to be biologically active. Without it, energy production is impaired at a fundamental level. This is part of why magnesium deficiency often presents as fatigue that more sleep doesn't fix.
Stress and cortisol regulation. Magnesium modulates the HPA axis. Chronic stress depletes magnesium; magnesium deficiency makes stress harder to handle. It's one of those feedback loops that, once you see it, you can't unsee.
Heart rhythm. The electrical signaling that maintains a regular heartbeat requires magnesium. Deficiency is associated with arrhythmia and elevated blood pressure.
The WHO estimates around 75% of people in Western countries don't get adequate magnesium from diet. Modern soil is depleted of it; processed food has stripped it from our staples; and the combination of chronic stress and daily coffee actively depletes whatever we do get in. Most people need more magnesium than they're getting, and most people who've tried supplementing haven't experienced what good magnesium actually does — because they were taking the wrong kind.
The Form Problem

Magnesium Oxide: The Form to Skip
Magnesium oxide is the most common form in cheap supplements. It's also the least bioavailable — absorption is somewhere around 4%. Four percent. Taking 400mg of magnesium oxide means your body absorbs roughly 16mg. The rest sits in your colon drawing in water, producing the laxative effect many people associate with "magnesium working" — but it's not working. It's just passing through.

Magnesium glycinate binds magnesium to glycine — an amino acid with its own calming, sleep-supportive properties. If sleep and nervous system regulation are your primary goals, this is the form I'd point you toward first.
Magnesium Citrate: Well-Absorbed, Slightly More Laxative
Bound to citric acid, magnesium citrate is well-studied for correcting deficiency with good bioavailability. It has a mild laxative effect at higher doses — which can actually be useful if constipation is part of the picture. Magnesium Malate: For Energy and Muscle

Magnesium Threonate: For the Brain
The only form that efficiently crosses the blood-brain barrier. Research on this form focuses on cognitive function and brain magnesium levels specifically. Exciting, and more expensive — worth knowing about if cognitive support is your primary goal.
How to Know If You're Deficient
Standard serum magnesium tests are actually unreliable for assessing cellular magnesium status. The body regulates serum levels tightly, so bloodwork can read normal even when your cells are depleted. This is part of why deficiency is so chronically underdiagnosed.

How to Take It
Timing: Evening, with your last meal of the day. The relaxation-supporting effects are most useful in the hours before sleep, and food improves absorption.
Dose: Most adults benefit from 300–400mg of elemental magnesium daily. If you're using citrate and notice loose stools, back off the dose slightly.
Consistency: This is a mineral repletion, not an acute intervention. Give it at least two to three weeks of daily use before evaluating.
Why Sea-Sourced Matters
A word on the sourcing choice for Magic Magnesium, because I think it's worth explaining.
Sea-sourced magnesium is extracted from seawater through a natural evaporation process that concentrates the mineral content while preserving trace minerals — boron, calcium, and others — that appear alongside magnesium in seawater.
