Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Emily L’Ami, therapeutic perfumer & founder of Bodha.
What’s your earliest plant memory?
Being with my grandad in his garden. The smell of fresh earth and sweetpea (which was also his nickname for me). He loved showing me how each plant works together and would always rub a buttercup under my chin for good-luck.
Is nature involved in your current work? If so, in what way?
Nature is the heart of my work. Creating therapeutic perfumes I’m working with the concentrated essences of plants every day in the form of absolutes, essential oils & tinctures. These ingredients are literally the life-force of the plant so when you breathe them in or let them soak into your skin you’re absorbing a little bit of that.
Do plants speak to you and how can you tell?
The plants absolutely speak. From a therapeutic perfume perspective each plant has its own inherent vibration which corresponds to its therapeutic qualities. For example scent ingredients made from things that root into the earth, like say vetiver, are grounding for our nervous system. It all connects and works together so perfectly. Nature is the ultimate guide and every single thing has a unique purpose, just like us.
What’s your favorite plant?
Roses, always & forever. Their softness and scent, from lemony rose to spicy rose to fruity rose. They have the highest vibrational frequency of all plants and a proven hypnotic effect on our nervous system that helps with depression, tension and sleep. I’m also a sucker for a romantic story and Cleopatra used to dip the sails of her ship in rose oil so her lover would smell her arrival on the air.
What’s your favorite natural therapy, whether that be plant medicine, acupuncture, or something else?
A swim in the sea in my all time favorite natural therapy. The energy & crisp salty scent of the ocean always makes you feel better no matter what.
What’s your favorite Wooden Spoon Herbs remedy? How has it helped you follow the plant path?
I’m in love with The Light Ray – I take it every morning and during the day when I need a little pick-me-up & because it’s so yummy!
