At WSH HQ, we're huge fans of Bailey Elder. You may know her from all the record covers she designs for Mexican Summer, or the animations she brings to life, like on Self Discovery for Social Survival. I met Bailey at Hartbreakers, a vegan diner in Brooklyn, after emailing for months, and we got to know each other over waffle fries. She's been instrumental in shaping the new Wooden Spoon, and we're so glad to have her vibes emanating around us. Read on for a peek inside this flower child's mind...
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Bailey Elder, I am an artist, graphic designer, animator, painter, and most importantly member of Earth.
What’s your earliest plant memory?
When I was really little I use to play in the woods with my friends behind my house. We would grind up berries from the trees with rocks, and take turns preparing meals for the “family”. We wouldn’t eat anything… but looking back on that I’m like “woah, so intuitive! We probably were making healing medicine without even knowing it.”
Are plants involved in your current work? If so, in what way?
The shapes I create are pretty intuitive, so I think it’s just in my nature to connect back to the plant world. They just kind of flow out of me without necessarily thinking about what kind of plant they are or where it’s from, everything feels pretty abstracted and reactive to one another. I feel most peaceful when I am in the woods or surrounded by plants in their natural habitat.
Do plants speak to you and how can you tell?
Yess, plants have such an influence on how you feel in a space, they are always radiating positivity and happiness to me when they are around and thriving. Such a mood enhancer and can really transform your mindset if you sit with them and try to connect deeper.
What’s your favorite plant?
Giant agaves, they just have such a magical presence to them! The energy they transmit is really comforting, I also love Agave syrup and Mezcal. I am sure there is more that they have to give that I don’t even know about! Such amazing creatures.
What’s your favorite natural therapy, whether that be plant medicine, acupuncture, or something else?
Meditation and learning about other planes of existence gives me solace. Occasionally I take psilocybin to feel more grounded, come back down to earth and feel connected. I have been taking Shatavari for a while to help my hormonal imbalances!
What’s your favorite Wooden Spoon Herbs remedy? How has it helped you follow the plant path?
I really love the Solar Power Energy / Daily Boost from the Commune Collection. I took this with me when I was in Arizona at an artist residency, it really helped me re-fresh in the middle of the day when I needed to revive my creative juices. I usually reach for caffeine around 3pm, but it has been really nice experimenting with these plant allies and minerals instead!
Bonus question: What was your inspiration for our logo design?
The magic of the sun and flowers, I feel like that is kind of the epitome of Wooden Spoon Herbs! Lauren’s vision and values feel very close to mine, so it was great to capture that and work together! Kindred spirits :-)
